Medications in Pregnancy

The following is a list of medications considered safe to take during pregnancy. Unless otherwise noted, these can be taken according to package instructions. Although these medications are considered safe, we do recommend minimal use of any medications, especially during the first three months of pregnancy.

NAUSEA/VOMITING:

Emetrol

COMMON COLD:

Acetaminophen (regular or extra-strength Tylenol)
DO NOT USE Phenylephrine, such as Sudafed, P.E.

COUGH:

Robitussin (plain only)
Mucinex Plain (NOT DM)
Cepacol or Sucrets throat lozenges

HEARTBURN:

Maalox
Riopan
Rolaids (with calcium)
Tums (with calcium)
Mylanta
Mylicon
Pepcid Complete, every AM and PM

DIARRHEA:

Kaopectate
Immodium AD

CONSTIPATION:

Colace 100 mgs, (Docusate sodium) stool softener
FiberCon – capsule – fiber
Citrucel – liquid fiber
Konsyl – liquid fiber
Metamucil – fiber – liquid or cookie bar
Milk of Magnesia – 3 to 4 Tbsp – laxative
Doxidan – caplet – laxative

YEAST INFECTION:

Gyne-Lotrimin (3 or 7-day cream)
Monistat (3 or 7-day cream)
Mycelex (3 or 7-day cream)

HEADACHES:

Acetaminophen

HEMORRHOIDS:

Preparation H
Tucks
Anusol or Anusol HC

“ITCHY TUMMY”:

Cocoa Butter or Nivea (jar)
Benadryl – 25 mgs orally every 4 hrs. as needed, or Benadryl cream (externally)

INSOMNIA:

Benadryl – 25 mgs orally at bedtime
Tylenol PM

INSECT REPELLANT:

Skin So Soft
Skinlastic

* Use sunscreen – you are more sensitive to the sun.
* No herbal products or vitamin supplements during pregnancy.
