Holidays: the days marked on our calendars that we look forward to, the events that bring people together, and the affairs in which we celebrate tradition.

Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Easter, or New Year’s Eve, we are constantly using these bold days on our calendars as an excuse to spend time with the people we care most about.  Usually, there are messages everywhere reminding us of the true meanings of these holidays.  And rightfully so, we need the reminders in today’s world to keep us grounded.  But Independence Day is different.

From the time we were born, our lives have been a running string of balancing real world tasks, and the breaks we take between those tasks.  As children we took breaks from playing by taking naps or enjoying a snack, in school we celebrated winter break, spring break, and (everyone’s favorite) summer break.  Now our breaks could be as short as stepping away from the office desk for fifteen minutes, or as long as a vacation away from home for a couple weeks.

We are constantly watching the clock or the calendar for these long awaited breaks in our days...

Thomas Merton once said, “Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy.  That is not our business, and in fact, it is nobody’s business.  What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy if anything can.”

Selflessness might be handing over those few dollars you have in your wallet to the homeless man on the corner, or paying for the person behind you in the drive through line, or even the things you do for your own children.  You know the way your heart feels...

For the next five weeks the gyms will be crowded with the “New Year resolutioners” attempting to achieve their goal of losing those extra pounds, getting healthier, and getting rid of that extra holiday weight. For those of you who are already regulars at the gym, good for you, keep up the good work, but for the next several weeks, hopefully you’re ready to wait in line for a treadmill. If you’re one of those goal setters, challenge yourself even more than you already are.

To you, the biggest struggle right now might be getting out of bed and...

It’s that time of year again… we’re all hustling around searching for that unforgettable gift, admiring the lights, wishing for snow (but only for a day or two), and trying to make it to every holiday occasion we could squeeze into our planners.  Every year we are reminded to slow down and appreciate what this season is truly about, but here at Columbus OB-GYN, we have a different message to send: celebrate.

Celebrate:  To do something special or enjoyable for an important event, occasion, holiday, etc. to praise someone or something.  Oprah Winfrey once said, “The more...

Feel the small copper disc in your fingers, turn your back to the fountain, squeeze your eyes shut tight, and toss the penny into the bubbling water.  One penny.  One wish.

London Elementary School in Madison County spent the month of October collecting wishes- 130,000 wishes to be exact.  First grade teacher, Khara Cunningham, organized a penny drive for LES students, explaining that all proceeds would go to the Batelle Breast Care Center located in their hometown of London.  Columbus OB-GYN’s Dr. Mitch Spahn is the current director of the center.
